Protect your Hair from Chlorine this Summer

How to protect your hair from chlorineIf you’re feeling anything like me this year, it’s a bit shocking (and very exciting) that summer starts next month. For many of us, that means it’s time to get bathing suit ready, plan summer getaways, update the wardrobe, and/or just prepare for all the fun that summer brings.  It’s also the perfect time to start thinking about ways to protect your hair in the upcoming months.

Although our weather conditions and activities vary, one thing most of us will be doing this summer is spending time in the pool.  Pool time means that your hair will be exposed to chlorine, and while chlorine is completely necessary for sanitary reasons, it’s not so great for your hair.

Effects of chlorine on your hair

Chlorine acts as a drying agent and can strip your hair of sebum, oil that it needs to be moisturized and healthy.  This exposure can cause hair to be dry, brittle, and weak.

How to prevent those effects

Thankfully, there are things you can do before, during, and after your swim that will help decrease or prevent chlorine damage.

Before:

  • Rinse your hair – Our hair is like a sponge, it absorbs liquid until its “full”.  By “filling it up” with clean water, you’re making it less likely to absorb the chlorinated water.
  • Apply a conditioner – Using a conditioner on the length of your hair will seal the cuticles and provide a barrier of protection against the chlorine.

During:

  • Rinse every hour – If you’re spending a longer amount of time in the pool, get out periodically and rinse your hair.  This will rinse away any chlorine that’s been absorbed and will fill the cuticle with clean water again.

After:

  • Use a clarifying shampoo to clean the hair and scalp thoroughly.
  • Apply the moisturizer/conditioner again  – After a day in the pool and sun, re-hydrating your hair is very important.

By taking these simple steps, you can get in all the pool time you need without sacrificing the health of your summer hair. Remember these tips for your family as well, children tend to spend even more time it the water and keeping their hair hydrated is just as important.

Summer is almost here, enjoy!

Quick and easy way to test your hair strength

Quick and easy way to test hair strengthHealthy hair is both strong and resilient and while you may think these qualities are easy to spot, they’re not.  Here is a quick and easy way to test just how strong and flexible your hair is.

The Steps:

  • Starting at the root, pluck a single strand from behind your ear.
  • Hold one end of the hair with your thumb and index finger.
  • Using your other hand, run your fingernail along the strand from the top to the bottom (sort of like curling ribbon).  Once you reach the end, the strand will curl up.
  • Hold the strand tight again for a few seconds and release.

The Results:

If the hair coils up again, the hair is strong and healthy.  If the strand remains straight or creates a looser curl, it is weak and unfortunately needs repair.

What to do:

If you find that your hair is on the weaker side, there are a few steps you can take to improve its health.

  1. Moisturize and protect.  The hair is weak so you need to focus on protecting the strands from breakage and further damage.  You can do that by using a Thermal Protection Spray, reducing heat exposure, and adding moisture to the hair strands. Use the Ovation Crème Rinse Moisturizer daily and a Deep Conditioning Treatment either once a week or twice a month.
  2. Nourish.  While you’re taking steps to protect the existing hair, you can also work to create healthy re-growth by nourishing the scalp.  The Ovation Cell Therapy will provide the scalp (& damaged hair) with vitamins, protein, extracts and more.  Applying these nutrients directly to the scalp will create long-term healthy (& much stronger) hair.

Even if your hair didn’t pass the test this time, by taking these simple steps, your hair will be back to its bouncy self sooner than you think.

Stronger hair is within reach!

She started using it just a couple weeks ago now and the change in her hair is amazing! She is super happy with what changes are happening with her hair. It is so much fuller now than it was, and she looks great! Thank you for the wonderful products and the little bit of happiness they provide to my mom.”

That is wonderful to hear Michelle, thanks so much for sending this!

Healthy Hair Tip: Using Accessories for Stronger Hair

Here at Ovation, it’s no secret that we want you to have healthy hair.  Because we don’t create miracles we can’t promise to create them for you, BUT with our product line specifically made to promote healthy hair and our knowledge of the how your hair works, we’d love to help you achieve the healthiest hair possible

With that in mind, we’re developing a series of posts on the blog all about hair health.  This series will include tips and tricks on both how to improve the hair you have and improve the health of future growth.  Not only that, the tips we’ll discuss are meant to help you achieve Thicker, Stronger, and Longer hair! Some tips will be quick and easy, things you can do every day.  Others may require a bit of dedication or explanation and we’ll dive into those too.

Hair accessories for less breakage - 1Today’s Healthy Hair Tip: Using Accessories for Stronger Hair

Hair accessories are an easy way to take an otherwise boring hairstyle from drab to fab.  Whether it’s a basic headband, sophisticated ponytail holder, or small clip with some extra blink, I’m all for it!

Unfortunately some of the hair candy we love may be damaging our hair. I know, I know, not the news us hair accessory lovers want to hear.  Not to worry though, this post is all about the (many) options of hair accessories that don’t cause havoc on hair.  Why make the switch to less-damaging hair accessories? By decreasing breakage, you’re keeping your hair strong.  Stronger hair is fuller, more manageable, and healthier overall.  Check out the list of accessories that will leave your hair strong and you happy.

Head wraps – head wraps are not only trendy, they are also one of the most non-damaging hair accessory options.  In fact, many head wraps that cover most of your hair not only cause less damage, they can actually protect your hair as well.  Head wraps are also a great choice because they are usually made with a soft, non-snagging fabric, aren’t tight on the head, easy to get on/off, and are super comfortable!

Headbands – headbands are another hair accessory that, depending on the type, don’t cause breakage or damage.  Look for ones that are non-constraining without sharp edges, added hardware, or any other parts that may snag or tangle hair.

Clips – Claw clips and other large clips are a fantastic way to keep your hair up without pulling it too tight.  It’s important to choose a clip with a smooth finish and one that doesn’t break hair when it’s taken out.

Hair accessories for less breakage - 2Scrunchies – The scrunchie might be one of the only reasons that your hair misses the 90’s because the scrunchie is one of the most non-damaging hair accessories of all time.  Marc Jacobs has a new scruchie-ish product on the market, but for those who aren’t ready to bring the trend back, they are perfect for keeping your hair up at night.

Hair ties – For most, even if we switch to using less damaging hair accessories, a ponytail every now and then in inevitable.  Many hair accessory manufactures are creating better products and hair ties like these are a great alternative to the everyday elastic.  They not only look cute in your hair, they also work well around the wrist so are easy to literally keep on hand.

Absolute no-no’s – There are a few things to avoid at all costs when it comes to hair accessories.  Using rubber bands or accessories with exposed hardware are rusted or cracked, is a sure way to increase hair breakage and decrease its strength.

Using one or more of the non-damaging hair accessories listed above will get you one step closer to healthier, stronger hair.  Another way, of course, is by adding the Ovation Advanced Cell Therapy System to your daily routine.  For more information about our products see our website.

Enjoy stronger hair!

Fun, Interesting and Random Hair Facts – Post #2

In the first Fun Hair Facts post, I shared just some of the interesting facts that us hair nerds here at Ovation have compiled.

Fun, Interesting and Random Hair Facts In fact, we found so many entertaining and cool tidbits that I’ve broken it up into two blog posts.  If knowing what the average lifespan of a hair strand is or how long the average man spends shaving in his lifetime, is of any interest to you, please read on…

  • If a man never shaved his beard, it would grow to over 30 feet in a lifetime.
  • On average, a women’s hair strand is half the diameter of a man’s hair strand.
  • Each hair follicle grows a completely new hair about 20 times in a lifetime.
  • The outer layer of hair is called the cuticle, and its purpose is to protect the inside layers. In healthy hair, the cuticle lays flat. In damaged hair, they are more open.
  • The middle layer of hair is called the cortex, which is made of long proteins twisted together.
  • The innermost layer of hair is called the medulla. Fine hair usually does not have a medulla. The purpose of the medulla has not yet been determined.
  • Blow-drying your hair works by changing hydrogen bonds to alter the shape. Water also changes hydrogen bonds; hence the reason women hate humidity.
  • The only part of hair that is not dead is the hair that is inside your scalp.
  • Healthy hair, when wet, can stretch to 30% its original length.
  • It takes about 7 years to grow your hair to your waist, and 3 years to grow to your shoulders.
  • The only way to get rid of “split ends” is to cut them. There is no way to completely repair them.
  • One sixteenth century doctor claimed you could restore hair by applying a random concoction made of boiled slugs, olive oil, honey, saffron, soap and cumin on the scalp.
  • If you pluck one hair, a new one will start growing from the follicle.
  • Different textures of hair have different cross-section shapes under a microscope. Straight hair is usually round and curly hair is usually oval.
  • The first mass marketed shampoo on the market was called “Dop”.
  • 90% of right-handed people grow cowlicks in a clockwise direction.
  • Hair is stronger than a copper wire of the same diameter.
  • The size of a hair follicle determines the thickness and length of hair.
  • Dark hair contains higher levels of carbon than light hair.
  • The werewolf legend is believed to have originated from an abnormality called Hirsutism, which causes excess body hair or facial hair to grow in places it is not supposed to.
  • Scientists can tell what you ate or drank, or the environment you live in, by examining a small piece of your hair.
  • Every inch of the human body is covered in hair besides the palms, soles of the feet, and lips.
  • The average life span of a strand of hair is 4-7 years.
  • The average man spends 5 months of his life shaving.
  • Facial hair grows faster than any other type of body hair.

Hopefully you’ve found some or all of these facts as interesting as we do!  Just remember that whether you have a clockwise cowlick or higher levels of carbon in your hair, Ovation Hair Products can help you get the best hair possible.  For more information and to make a purchase, click here.

Enjoy!

2013 New Year’s Resolutions that your Hair will Love

Can you believe 2013 is next week? The whole New Year’s resolution thing gets me very excited.  It’s a good exercise not only because of the hope it brings for an upcoming new year and fresh start, but it also requires reflection and for me, a strong appreciation for the last year.

New Years Resolutions your Hair will Love

It’s interesting to think about what resolutions people make and why, the inspiration behind the decision, and whether they’ll follow through.  There are of course the standard resolutions and those that are unique as we are.  At Ovation we’re motivated by hair health so that is one thing I consider when deciding what resolutions to make.

These resolution ideas will not only make you feel great, they will give your hair a happy new year too!

Drink more water – Drinking more water is a great resolution because it’s measurable, attainable, wonderful for overall health and the health of your hair!  Each strand of hair is made up of about 25% water, so your hair needs to stay hydrated to remain healthy.  The scalp also needs water to keep the hair shaft moisturized.  Each person should drink half their weight in oz of water per day.  Whether this means cutting down on other drinks like sodas or just increasing your water intake, this is one easy resolution that has huge rewards.

Eat healthier, no junk food – Eating healthy is by far one of the most notorious of resolutions and probably also one of the first to be abandoned.  Choosing a healthy diet benefits your hair immensely because it’s the most effective way for your body to get the nutrients it needs.  If your body isn’t getting those nutrients, your scalp health becomes less of a priority and can deteriorate.

Know that healthy is an important word here and eating healthier and decreasing junk food is very different than losing weight in an unhealthy way.  Severe weight loss and crash diets are one of the main reasons for hair loss.

Take a multivitamin – As mentioned above, the best thing you can do for your hair is to make sure your body is healthy, but even eating healthy doesn’t guarantee that you’re getting all the nutrients you need. Taking a daily multivitamin will provide you with a great source of vitamins and minerals that are crucial to good health.  Another huge benefit to taking the right multivitamin is that it will keep your scalp, hair, and skin healthy as well.

We recently launched a multivitamin that includes vitamins that do just that. The Ovation Multivitamin also has added extracts from all natural roots, herbs, plants, and fruits that are known for their health and hair benefits.

Go natural – Many people are not only introducing natural and organic food items into their diets, but are also committing to the use of naturally derived body and hair care products. After all, these items are being consumed too when absorbed into the skin.  By purchasing naturally derived products, you’re getting higher quality ingredients which of course make your scalp happy. You’re also avoiding harsh chemicals that could be building up on your scalp, causing irritation and possibly even worse.

Ovation products are naturally derived and contain vitamins, antioxidants, plant extracts, and aromatherapy scents that all work to promote healthy hair.

Quit smoking – We all know that smoking causes all types of health problems, so while your lungs and heart will be very happy without nicotine, so will your hair. Smoking is said to induce both premature hair loss and graying because it interferes with the circulation that the scalp and follicle need. Carbon Monoxide and other toxins found in cigarettes make it difficult for your cells to reproduce into healthy cells, including the cells needed for hair growth and strength.

When it comes to resolutions, the options are endless so whether you choose a resolution that benefits your hair or not, make this New Year a great one and may 2013 be your best year yet!

Cheers!

Fun, Interesting and Random Hair Facts – Post #1

Did you know that hair is the fastest growing tissue in your body or that hair can absorb its weight in water?  My guess is that you didn’t know that and I’m assuming you’ll never need to, but hair gurus like us at Ovation think facts like these are kind of cool!  In fact, there are so many cool and interesting hair facts out there that I’ve broken up this post into two parts.
Interesting Hair Facts
While today’s Hair Fun Facts Post #1 may not fill you with a ton of useful information on hair health, it may provide a little entertainment and/or some fun conversation starters. Check them out:

  • The average person has between 100,000 and 150,000 strands of hair on their head.
  • A natural blonde usually has more hair strands then dark or red hair. Towheads generally have 120,000 strands; brown/black-haired people 100,000 strands, and redheads average about 80,000 strands.
  • Hair is the fastest growing tissue in the body. The only thing that grows faster is bone marrow.
  • Everybody sheds between 40-150 strands of hair per day.
  • Hair is made up of mostly keratin, which our outer layer of skin and fingernails are made out of.  In animals, horns, hooves, claws, feathers, beaks, quills (porcupines), and baleen (whales) are all also made of keratin.
  • On an average adult scalp, 25 meters of hair fiber is produced every day.
  • At any random time, 90% of the hair on a head is in a growing phase, while the other 10% is in a resting phase.
  • Hair can absorb its weight in water.
  • The hair follicle contains its own muscle, nerve and blood supply.
  • Hair grows the fastest during the summer, sleep, or between the ages of 16 to 24.
  • The process of removing unwanted body hair dates back to the ancient Egyptians.
  • At one time, in Russia, there was a random tax for wearing a beard.
  • Humans have the same amount of hair follicles per square inch as a chimpanzee.
  • The first African-American hair products were created by Madam CJ Walker, the first American black woman to become a millionaire.
  • Body hair is generally shorter because the growing phase is a lot shorter than the growing phase of hair on the scalp.
  • Human hair and fingernails continue to grow in death.
  • Scientists have discovered that people with a higher IQ, have more zinc and copper in their hair.
  • The purpose of hair is to act as a thermal protection, since our head lacks the thermal insulation fat layers.
  • Less than 4% of the world’s population has natural red hair.
  • Research shows that hair becomes drier with age.
  • Gender is one thing that cannot be identified by a hair strand.
  • Stress can make dandruff worse.
  • The average American woman spends between 10-23 thousand dollars in a lifetime on unwanted hair removal.
  • The color of hair depends on how much melanin each strand has.
  • Men without hair on their chests are more likely to get cirrhosis of the liver than men with hair.
  • The human body has approximately 5 million hair follicles.
  • Alopecia is the medical term for hair loss.
  • The longest documented hair was measured in 2004. It belonged to Xie Qiuping from China, and measured 18.5 feet long.
  • For it to be apparent that you are balding, you would have to lose 50% of your hair.
  • Humans are born with all of their hair follicles and there is no possible way to increase the amount of hair follicles you have.
  • Hair turns grey as a result of the pigment cells in the hair follicle not working properly. The hair bulb slows melanin production as a result of age or stress.
  • A whole head of hair could support up to 2 tons.
  • The length of the growing phase of hair shortens as you age.
  • When you are born, you have about 1000 hair follicles per square centimeter. This number drops as you age.

Whether you’re one of the 4% natural redheads, have a head of hair that grows slower than others, or are looking to beat the world record in hair length, Ovation products can make the hair you have, the best hair it can be.

Enjoy and stay tuned for part #2!

Healthy Hair Series: Use a Wide Tooth Comb for Thicker Hair

Here at Ovation, it’s no secret that we want you to have healthy hair.  Because we don’t create miracles we can’t promise to create that for you, BUT with our product line specifically made to promote healthy hair and our knowledge of the how your hair works, we’d love to help you achieve the healthiest hair possible. Use a wide tooth comb for thicker hair
Today’s Healthy Hair Tip: Use a Wide Tooth Comb for Thicker Hair

Making the switch to a wide tooth comb from your everyday brush seems a little weird, right? There are a lot of people that think they serve two entirely different purposes. The fact is, they don’t and making that simple change can have huge benefits.  Brushing your hair, especially vigorous brushing or with harsh bristle brushes can literally rip your hair apart.  Not only does this break pieces off, it pulls healthy strands completely out, especially when the hair is wet. Over time this leaves your hair weak and lifeless.

Using a wide tooth comb gently detangles the hair so it decreases breakage and shedding which will keep your hair strong.  Strong hair strands are thicker, creating an overall fuller head of hair. Sounds easy for some, but I know that using a comb like this won’t work for everyone every day.  If you have a hair type where a wide tooth comb isn’t ideal for primary use, consider working it into your hair routine in some way.  Decreasing brush use to a few times a week can make a difference.  Remember it’s really important to be gentle; patience is the key to avoid breakage while detangling your hair.  The best thing about today’s tip is that wide tooth combs are inexpensive.  Even the best brands are under $5 so it’s at least worth giving it a try.

Healthier, thicker hair is within reach!
