How to protect your hair from chlorineIf you’re feeling anything like me this year, it’s a bit shocking (and very exciting) that summer starts next month. For many of us, that means it’s time to get bathing suit ready, plan summer getaways, update the wardrobe, and/or just prepare for all the fun that summer brings.  It’s also the perfect time to start thinking about ways to protect your hair in the upcoming months.

Although our weather conditions and activities vary, one thing most of us will be doing this summer is spending time in the pool.  Pool time means that your hair will be exposed to chlorine, and while chlorine is completely necessary for sanitary reasons, it’s not so great for your hair.

Effects of chlorine on your hair

Chlorine acts as a drying agent and can strip your hair of sebum, oil that it needs to be moisturized and healthy.  This exposure can cause hair to be dry, brittle, and weak.

How to prevent those effects

Thankfully, there are things you can do before, during, and after your swim that will help decrease or prevent chlorine damage.


  • Rinse your hair – Our hair is like a sponge, it absorbs liquid until its “full”.  By “filling it up” with clean water, you’re making it less likely to absorb the chlorinated water.
  • Apply a conditioner – Using a conditioner on the length of your hair will seal the cuticles and provide a barrier of protection against the chlorine.


  • Rinse every hour – If you’re spending a longer amount of time in the pool, get out periodically and rinse your hair.  This will rinse away any chlorine that’s been absorbed and will fill the cuticle with clean water again.


  • Use a clarifying shampoo to clean the hair and scalp thoroughly.
  • Apply the moisturizer/conditioner again  – After a day in the pool and sun, re-hydrating your hair is very important.

By taking these simple steps, you can get in all the pool time you need without sacrificing the health of your summer hair. Remember these tips for your family as well, children tend to spend even more time it the water and keeping their hair hydrated is just as important.

Quick and easy way to test your hair strength

Quick and easy way to test hair strengthHealthy hair is both strong and resilient and while you may think these qualities are easy to spot, they’re not.  Here is a quick and easy way to test just how strong and flexible your hair is.

The Steps:

  • Starting at the root, pluck a single strand from behind your ear.
  • Hold one end of the hair with your thumb and index finger.
  • Using your other hand, run your fingernail along the strand from the top to the bottom (sort of like curling ribbon).  Once you reach the end, the strand will curl up.
  • Hold the strand tight again for a few seconds and release.

The Results:

If the hair coils up again, the hair is strong and healthy.  If the strand remains straight or creates a looser curl, it is weak and unfortunately needs repair.

What to do:

If you find that your hair is on the weaker side, there are a few steps you can take to improve its health.

  1. Moisturize and protect.  The hair is weak so you need to focus on protecting the strands from breakage and further damage.  You can do that by using a Thermal Protection Spray, reducing heat exposure, and adding moisture to the hair strands.   2. Getting Rid of Hair Static – Healthy Hair

How to reduce Hair Static ElectricityFrequent static electricity in hair is enough to drive anyone a bit crazy.  Hair sticking straight up or to clothing is not only annoying, it’s simply not a good look! Hair static is caused when electrons transfer from one atom to another which turns the neutral charge of those atoms into either a negative or positive charge, causing them to repel.  Low humidity makes static worse because the lack of water in the air prevents the electrons from moving off you more quickly, so the static charge builds up more easily.

The good news about static electricity in hair (yes, there is some) is that it’s actually pretty easy to get rid of.  So, next time the static in your hair has you frustrated, try one of these simple fixes:

Dryer sheets – Dryer sheets don’t just take static out of your clothes, they work very well to get it out of hair. Dryer sheets typically have a positive charge so they effectively neutralize the electric charge in your hair and eliminate the static.  Rub a sheet on larger sections of your hair, from the root to tip until the static is gone.

Dampen hair – By lubricating and adding moisture to the hair, friction (and the transfer of atoms) is significantly reduced which helps eliminate static.  Adding water to lubricate the hair when it’s full of static is sometimes the easiest solution.  Use a spray bottle or a small amount of water on the fingers to dampen the hair.

Heat protectant – When you blow dry and use hot styling tools, you suck the moisture out of your hair. Using a heat protection spray can lock in moisture AND lubricate the hair, which will help prevent static.  Ovation Thermal Protection Spray can be used daily to do just that, coat the hair, decreasing static and protecting hair from all types of heat damage.

Hair spray – Don’t have a Heat Protection Spray on hand? Hair spray will work too. The best way to apply the right amount of hair spray to calm static is to spray your brush, then brush your hair.  Hair spray can coat the strands and keep them in control.  You can also spray a bit onto hats or scarves that will be covering your hair. This will decrease the amount of static when you take those items off.

Lotion – A small amount of lotion applied to the ends can also eliminate static.  A little goes a long way so apply hand or body lotion to your hands, rub in, then run your hands through the hair.  Make sure to stay away from the roots, lotion can cause the hair (especially at the roots) to look greasy.

Hydrating conditioner – If static in your hair happens more than every so often, you may not be getting enough moisture on a daily basis.  A more hydrating conditioner will help lock in that moisture and decrease the static.  The Ovation Crème Rinse Moisturizer is a great product for that.  It contains natural ingredients that condition and moisturize without weighing hair down.

Natural bristle brush – Certain brushes make you more prone to static electricity than others, synthetic bristles specifically are more likely to cause that friction and transfer of atoms.  Try making the switch to a brush with natural bristles especially when you notice that your hair is on the dryer side.

2013 New Year’s Resolutions that your Hair will Love

Can you believe 2013 is next week? The whole New Year’s resolution thing gets me very excited.  It’s a good exercise not only because of the hope it brings for an upcoming new year and fresh start, but it also requires reflection and for me, a strong appreciation for the last year.

It’s interesting to think about what resolutions people make and why, the inspiration behind the decision, and whether they’ll follow through.  There are of course the standard resolutions and those that are unique as we are.  At Ovation we’re motivated by hair health so that is one thing I consider when deciding what resolutions to make.

These resolution ideas will not only make you feel great, they will give your hair a happy new year too!

Drink more water – Drinking more water is a great resolution because it’s measurable, attainable, wonderful for overall health and the health of your hair!  Each strand of hair is made up of about 25% water, so your hair needs to stay hydrated to remain healthy.  The scalp also needs water to keep the hair shaft moisturized.  Each person should drink half their weight in oz of water per day.  Whether this means cutting down on other drinks like sodas or just increasing your water intake, this is one easy resolution that has huge rewards.

Eat healthier, no junk food – Eating healthy is by far one of the most notorious of resolutions and probably also one of the first to be abandoned.  Choosing a healthy diet benefits your hair immensely because it’s the most effective way for your body to get the nutrients it needs.  If your body isn’t getting those nutrients, your scalp health becomes less of a priority and can deteriorate.

Know that healthy is an important word here and eating healthier and decreasing junk food is very different than losing weight in an unhealthy way.  Severe weight loss and crash diets are one of the main reasons for hair loss.

Take a multivitamin – As mentioned above, the best thing you can do for your hair is to make sure your body is healthy, but even eating healthy doesn’t guarantee that you’re getting all the nutrients you need. Improving the health of your hair is definitely not something you can do overnight.  It is a process that takes time, patience and dedication.  For a results oriented person like me, this can be discouraging and with all the different ways to improve hair health, I get a bit overwhelmed.  If you’re at all like me, you may think to yourself, “Where do I even begin?”

One way is to start small, so I found five easy and most importantly doable steps you can take on a daily basis to improve and maintain your hair health.

Drink lots of water – Everyone knows that drinking lots of water is necessary for overall health, but many don’t realize how important water is for you hair.  Each strand of hair is made up of about 25% water.  The body and scalp need that water to keep the hair shaft moisturized.  Each person needs 8-10 8oz glasses of water every day and even more if you drink coffee, alcohol or work out.  Think about this next time you want to skip out on the water…hydrated hair is healthy hair!

Use heat protection – Most people expose heat to their hair every day, whether its sunlight, a blow-dryer, curling or straight iron and this exposure can cause major damage.  Because we’re so dependent on heated styling tools and treatments, it would be very difficult to eliminate heat exposure, but there is an easy step to decrease it: Use a heat or thermal protection spray.  This type of product coats the hair and protects the strands from breakage and dehydration.  Ovation’s Thermal Protection Spray not only protects the hair from heat, it also has naturally derived ingredients that moisturize the hair and make it more manageable throughout the day.
