Hard vs. Soft Water and the effects on your hair

Hard Water - Effects on hairHave you ever moved to a new city or even a new part of town and noticed that the condition of your hair worsened?  The reason for this may have to do with the water quality in your area and if you have experienced it, you most likely moved from a place with soft water to an area with harder water.

What’s the difference between hard and soft water?

Hard water is water with high mineral content and contains relatively high levels of calcium and magnesium.  85% of the US population lives in a place where the water is hard.  Soft water is either naturally occurring or produced and contains low levels of minerals.

How to tell whether you have hard or soft water –

There are several ways to find out what kind of water is in your city or part of town.  One quick and pretty accurate way is to simply Google it.  Another way is to look at the fixtures in your bathroom. If your faucet or showerhead is covered in what looks like a mineral film, it’s an indication of hard water.  If you have soft water, you may be able to tell by the way the water feels.  Soft water feels silky, almost slimy and is more likely to lather up your products.

What is the effect of hard water on your hair?

Throughout the day, your hair is exposed to many things and the point of washing it is to remove the buildup of pollution, dirt, styling products and more.  If your water contains a high level of mineral content, it’s not getting the hair as clean as it should be.  Those minerals also create their own film and buildup which can not only leave your hair feeling lackluster, but can also effect the cleanliness of your scalp.  The continued buildup of these minerals on the hair and scalp can cause your hair to be dull, frizzy, limp, and lifeless.  Lastly, they can cause the hair cuticle to lift which makes hair unmanageable and dry.

How to keep hair healthy if you have hard water –

  • Purchase a showerhead filter: A quality showerhead will filter out most or all of the minerals that would cause buildup or damage to the hair and scalp.  They can be expensive and you get what you pay for, but it’s the most effective way to prevent hard water hair.
  • Use a clarifying shampoo: Clarifying or chelating shampoos contain powerful cleansers like sulfates and EDTA that are great for removing that buildup of minerals that hard water creates.  Ovation’s Clarifying Therapy Shampoo is specifically formulated for weekly or bi-monthly use and includes ingredients that will effectively combat hard water.
  • Rinse with purified water: If your water is hard, you most likely don’t drink it.  Use your drinking water filter (or a jug from the store) and fill up a large spray bottle of purified water and keep it in your shower.  Use that water as much as you can when rinsing your hair.
  • Moisturized daily: Hydration is very important if you have hard water because of the way it lifts the cuticle and causes dryness.  This makes it harder for the hair strand to absorb and retain moisture, so its recommended to Crème Rinse daily and apply a hair mask once a week.

Unfortunately, we don’t have much control over whether our water is soft or hard, but that doesn’t mean we have to let hard water get the best of our hair.  By keeping these tips in mind, we have the option to keep our hair healthy no matter what the water quality is.

Enjoy shiny, manageable and healthy hair!

Frizzy Hair Remedies

How to avoid frizzy hairWho doesn’t love curly hair? As a stick straight – won’t curl to save its life – haired gal, I have an insane amount of natural curly envy. Although I consider wavy hair to be the perfect hair type, my curly-headed friends constantly remind me that the grass is always greener.  The complaints I hear most from them relate to their battle with frizz.

There are several different things that cause frizzy hair and they all revolve around one thing – Moisture (or lack thereof).  If your hair is low on moisture, you’re more prone to frizz.  Curly hair tends to be drier, which is why that hair type is most commonly affected by frizz.

While frizz is a concern for curly hair types all year round, in the next few months it may become an issue for the rest of us as well. Summer is just not the time for unruly hair so here are a few ways to prevent those coveted beachy waves from turning into the not-so-coveted poofy mess.

Use ethyl and isopropyl alcohol free products: Many sources say to stick with alcohol free hair care products completely, but some types of alcohol are actually good for your hair.  There are two different types of alcohol you should be aware of when looking at skin and hair care product ingredients, volatile and non-volatile. The volatile ones (ethyl and isopropyl for example) are the ones you want to avoid.  They have a small molecular weight so they evaporate quickly, causing dry frizzy hair.  Non-volatile or fatty alcohols, such as cetyl alcohol have a higher carbon count so they are oily and condition hair. Unlike many other styling products, the Ovation Thermal Protection and Volumizing Sprays are not only alcohol free, they also contain conditioning ingredients that will help prevent dryness and frizz.

Don’t wash hair every day or use gentle cleansers: Natural oils are great frizz fighters so you want to keep them around (for at least a day or two).  Certain shampoos not only remove build up and dirt, they also remove those oils that hydrate the hair.  If you can skip a few washings a week or co-wash (rinse and condition – no shampoo), you’ll keep your hair more hydrated.  If you prefer to wash every day, make sure to use a sulfate free shampoo that doesn’t strip your hair of the oil it needs.

Use a heat protectant spray:  Thermal Protection sprays coat the hair and lock in moisture so it both decreases and prevent frizz.  Ovation’s Thermal Protection Spray also includes ingredients that repair the hair while adding smoothness and shine. Use it daily for hydrated, protected hair.

Purchase a quality blow dryer: Purchasing an ionic hair dryer is a great investment in your hair health, especially if you are more prone to frizz. Ionic blow dryers dry the hair very quickly because they are very effective in breaking down the water molecules in the hair.  They also create negatively charged ions which keep hair cuticles closed.  A closed cuticle retains moisture, controls frizz and enhances shine.

Moisturize often: Whether your hair is naturally dry or not, it’s a good idea to increase the amount of moisture you add into your hair care routine during the summer.  You’ll definitely want to moisturize (to re-hydrate) after each wash and for some, a daily hydrating or weekly hair mask routine is necessary to avoid frizz.

Just remember, healthy hair is hydrated hair.  These tips will keep will get you there and by following them, you’ll be well on your way to a frizz free summer!

Popular Hair Myths Debunked!

Hair Myths and FactsDoes your hair grow faster in the summer? If you pluck a gray hair, will more grow back in its place? Should you brush your hair 100 times per day? Hair myths like these have been around for so long, I’m not sure anyone questions whether they’re true.  In this post we’ll look at some of the most popular hair myths and get to the bottom of which are true, partially true, and not true at all!

100 brush strokes a day – FALSE – Most of us can’t get through the day without brushing our hair whether it’s to detangle or refresh a hairstyle, its necessary.  Brushing in the correct way has benefits that go beyond the short term.  By brushing your hair, you stimulate the scalp and spread oils down the hair shaft which moisturizes the strands and adds shine.  The key to healthy hair brushing is being gentle, using the right brush, and keeping it to a minimum. 100 strokes per day is not only unnecessary, it’s too much and can cause breakage and other damage.

Hair grows faster in the summer – FALSE – As nice as that would be, our hair doesn’t grow any faster in the summer or any season for that matter.  Time of year, weather, and other environmental factors don’t affect hair growth rate.  The only time it’s scientifically proven that a woman’s hair grows faster is while she’s pregnant.

Pluck a gray hair and more will grow back in its place – FALSE – Each hair has its own follicle and there is no way to increase the amount of follicles on your head (unless you have a hair transplant).  When you start to see gray hairs, it means that less pigment is being transferred to each hair strand.  Going gray is a slow process so when you pluck a hair during the beginning stages, the replacement could be either gray or your natural color, but will never be more than one.  Eventually, every single hair that comes from that follicle will be gray whether you pluck it or not.

Trimming makes your hair grow faster – FALSE – Trimming your ends will not make hair grow faster, but does keep your hair healthy and strong.  The key is to trim split ends before the hair splits up the shaft.  This breakage causes hair to be weak, brittle, and thin! It’s recommended to get a full trim every 6-12 weeks depending on your hair health.  You can also “dust” your ends in between trims.  Dusting is a quick, very light trim (so light that the cut ends are like dust).

Stress makes your hair fall out – PARTIALLY TRUE – Everyday stress does not make your hair fall out.  This myth is partially true because in cases where stress is so extreme that it affects hormones or nutrition levels, hair loss can occur.

You can’t repair split ends – TRUE – There is nothing you can do to repair an end that is split and as mentioned above, it’s recommended to cut the end off to prevent further breakage.  Another way to minimize the effects of split ends is to apply Ovation Cell Therapy.  Cell Therapy adds protein to the hair shaft which works to fill the split hair and smooth the cuticle.  The best way to tackle split ends is prevention. Using high-quality, hair strengthening products like the Cell Therapy System keep the hair healthy and prevent the hair from splitting in the first place.

Can’t dye hair while pregnant – PARTIALLY TRUE – Color and other hair treatments are no longer on the list of things pregnant women should stay away from.  Experts are advising pregnant women (and the general population) to be aware of what those treatments involve and what ingredients they contain.  Fortunately, more and more stylists are switching to more organic alternatives with less synthetic, harsh chemicals.

Shaving your baby’s hair makes it grow in thicker – FALSE –Shaving a baby’s hair doesn’t have any effect on the strand thickness or hair growth rate because these factors are based on the follicles under the skin.  It is common however for babies to lose their “baby hair” 4-5 months after they’re born and when new hair grows in, it may be thicker and/or a different color.

Whether this article makes you cut down the amount of brush strokes you strive for each day or bursts your bubble about summer hair growth, I hope you found these facts as interesting as I did. I’m sure that people will continue to shave their children’s head (tradition in some cultures) and avoid plucking gray hairs. That’s ok because whether you believe these myths to be fact or fiction, none of them have a major impact on overall hair health.

What myths did you grow up believing? Are there any you just can’t let go?

Healthy Hair Tip: Use a Thermal Protection Spray Daily

Best Thermal Protection SprayHere at Ovation, it’s no secret that we want you to have healthy hair.  Because we don’t create miracles we can’t make any promises, but with our product line specifically made to promote healthy hair and our knowledge of the how your hair works, we’d love to help you achieve the healthiest hair possible

With that in mind, we’ve developed a series of posts on the blog all about hair health.  This series will include tips and tricks on both how to improve the hair you have and improve the health of future growth.  Not only that, the tips we’ll discuss are meant to help you achieve Thicker, Stronger, and Longer hair! Some tips will be quick and easy, things you can do every day.  Others may require a bit of dedication or explanation and we’ll dive into those too.

Today’s Healthy Hair Tip: Use a Thermal Protection Spray Daily

Our hair needs moisture.  It’s made of water and without the proper amount of moisture it becomes dry, brittle, weak and unmanageable.  There are plenty of things we do every day that affect our hair’s moisture level.  By exposing our hair to the sun (even in the winter months) and using styling tools like hair dryers and flat irons, it slowly loses moisture throughout the day.

When you use a Thermal Protection Spray, it seals the cuticle and protects the hair strands from all types of heat damage.

Ovation’s Thermal Protection Spray not only provides heat protection for your hair, it contains naturally derived, high-quality ingredients that do much more!  Our unique non-greasy formula includes panthenol and hydrolyzed keratin protein that moisturizes, adds softness and increases shine.  The peach and pomegranate extracts have anti-oxidant properties and promote the healing of damaged tissue.  For only $14.95, it’s a must have product especially during the upcoming summer months and for those that use heat styling tools daily.

Here’s how to use a Thermal Protection Spray:

  1. Towel dry hair
  2. Separate into sections
  3. Spray sections 2-3 times from 9-12 inches away from the hair
  4. Gently rub product in or use a wide tooth comb to make sure the strands are coated

Using a Thermal Protection Spray is one of the easiest ways to protect your hair on daily basis! Keep it up and enjoy moisturized, healthy hair!

Protect your Hair from Chlorine this Summer

How to protect your hair from chlorineIf you’re feeling anything like me this year, it’s a bit shocking (and very exciting) that summer starts next month. For many of us, that means it’s time to get bathing suit ready, plan summer getaways, update the wardrobe, and/or just prepare for all the fun that summer brings.  It’s also the perfect time to start thinking about ways to protect your hair in the upcoming months.

Although our weather conditions and activities vary, one thing most of us will be doing this summer is spending time in the pool.  Pool time means that your hair will be exposed to chlorine, and while chlorine is completely necessary for sanitary reasons, it’s not so great for your hair.

Effects of chlorine on your hair

Chlorine acts as a drying agent and can strip your hair of sebum, oil that it needs to be moisturized and healthy.  This exposure can cause hair to be dry, brittle, and weak.

How to prevent those effects

Thankfully, there are things you can do before, during, and after your swim that will help decrease or prevent chlorine damage.

Before:

  • Rinse your hair – Our hair is like a sponge, it absorbs liquid until its “full”.  By “filling it up” with clean water, you’re making it less likely to absorb the chlorinated water.
  • Apply a conditioner – Using a conditioner on the length of your hair will seal the cuticles and provide a barrier of protection against the chlorine.

During:

  • Rinse every hour – If you’re spending a longer amount of time in the pool, get out periodically and rinse your hair.  This will rinse away any chlorine that’s been absorbed and will fill the cuticle with clean water again.

After:

  • Use a clarifying shampoo to clean the hair and scalp thoroughly.
  • Apply the moisturizer/conditioner again  – After a day in the pool and sun, re-hydrating your hair is very important.

By taking these simple steps, you can get in all the pool time you need without sacrificing the health of your summer hair. Remember these tips for your family as well, children tend to spend even more time it the water and keeping their hair hydrated is just as important.

Summer is almost here, enjoy!

Quick and easy way to test your hair strength

Quick and easy way to test hair strengthHealthy hair is both strong and resilient and while you may think these qualities are easy to spot, they’re not.  Here is a quick and easy way to test just how strong and flexible your hair is.

The Steps:

  • Starting at the root, pluck a single strand from behind your ear.
  • Hold one end of the hair with your thumb and index finger.
  • Using your other hand, run your fingernail along the strand from the top to the bottom (sort of like curling ribbon).  Once you reach the end, the strand will curl up.
  • Hold the strand tight again for a few seconds and release.

The Results:

If the hair coils up again, the hair is strong and healthy.  If the strand remains straight or creates a looser curl, it is weak and unfortunately needs repair.

What to do:

If you find that your hair is on the weaker side, there are a few steps you can take to improve its health.

  1. Moisturize and protect.  The hair is weak so you need to focus on protecting the strands from breakage and further damage.  You can do that by using a Thermal Protection Spray, reducing heat exposure, and adding moisture to the hair strands. Use the Ovation Crème Rinse Moisturizer daily and a Deep Conditioning Treatment either once a week or twice a month.
  2. Nourish.  While you’re taking steps to protect the existing hair, you can also work to create healthy re-growth by nourishing the scalp.  The Ovation Cell Therapy will provide the scalp (& damaged hair) with vitamins, protein, extracts and more.  Applying these nutrients directly to the scalp will create long-term healthy (& much stronger) hair.

Even if your hair didn’t pass the test this time, by taking these simple steps, your hair will be back to its bouncy self sooner than you think.

Stronger hair is within reach!

Maybe I lose 2-3 strands of hair a week since Ovation, as compared to 140-210 a week before Ovation, big difference! Get to know us! Meet Leilani

Ovation Personal Account RepWe’re lucky in that we get to hear from our clients all the time.  Our Client Service and Personal Account Representatives, who work very hard to give you the best Ovation experience, have daily conversations with clients about everything from hair health to product instructions.  Because we love getting to know you, I thought it would fun for you to get to know us.  The employees here represent different backgrounds, ethnicities, personalities, and very different hair types.  Learning about the ways each of us use Ovation Products and what our individual results are, may give you a better idea of how the products works for many different types of people.

So Ovation Nation….Meet Leilani!

She works as one of our Personal Account Representatives and helps clients place all types of orders.

How long have you worked at Ovation Hair? 2 years

What is your favorite thing about working here? Helping others achieve their hair goals!

What are some of your favorite things to do while you’re not at work? I love being outdoors with my amazing family and at the moment especially enjoy restoring our ’64 Falcon.

What is your hair type? I have coarse dry hair.

What is your go-to hair style?  I blow dry half of my hair, and then straighten the front and top of my hair. I roll it in a bun and by the time I get to work, I take the bun out and have big curls.

How do you use the Ovation products? What is your hair care regimen? I wash every other day or every two days. The night before I wash, I dampen my scalp and apply the Cell Therapy to my scalp and massage it in. In the morning I wash with the Color Therapy Shampoo, rinse, apply a hair mask to my ends and leave for 5 minutes. I then follow up with the Crème Rinse Moisturizer for 2-3 minutes and rinse. I will towel dry, apply the Thermal Protection Spray, comb through and blow dry. Lastly, I straighten and finish the style with an Argan Oil.

How has Ovation improved the health of your hair? My hair was excessively shedding and very dry after each of my pregnancies. Since using the Ovation products, not only has the shedding stopped, but I was also able to decrease my split ends and my hair became thick again.

What would you say to someone who’s interested in trying Ovation? My advice is to purchase a 12oz.Cell Therapy System and stay consistent with the products until the bottles are empty.  A great hydrating regime will help take your hair to the next level as well. The hard work you put into your hair care regime is what you will get out of it.

Thank you for sharing Lani.  You’ve helped countless clients achieve healthy hair and we’re fortunate to have you as part of the Ovation PAR team!
