Here at Ovation, it’s no secret that we want you to have healthy hair.  Because we don’t create miracles we can’t promise to create them for you, BUT with our product line specifically made to promote healthy hair and our knowledge of the how your hair works, we’d love to help you achieve the healthiest hair possible

With that in mind, we’re developing a series of posts on the blog all about hair health.  This series will include tips and tricks on both how to improve the hair you have and improve the health of future growth.  Not only that, the tips we’ll discuss are meant to help you achieve Thicker, Stronger, and Longer hair! Some tips will be quick and easy, things you can do every day.  Others may require a bit of dedication or explanation and we’ll dive into those too.

Hair accessories for less breakage - 1Today’s Healthy Hair Tip: Using Accessories for Stronger Hair

Hair accessories are an easy way to take an otherwise boring hairstyle from drab to fab.  Whether it’s a basic headband, sophisticated ponytail holder, or small clip with some extra blink, I’m all for it!

Unfortunately some of the hair candy we love may be damaging our hair. I know, I know, not the news us hair accessory lovers want to hear.  Not to worry though, this post is all about the (many) options of hair accessories that don’t cause havoc on hair.  Why make the switch to less-damaging hair accessories? By decreasing breakage, you’re keeping your hair strong.  Stronger hair is fuller, more manageable, and healthier overall.  Check out the list of accessories that will leave your hair strong and you happy.

Head wraps – head wraps are not only trendy, they are also one of the most non-damaging hair accessory options.  In fact, many head wraps that cover most of your hair not only cause less damage, they can actually protect your hair as well.  Head wraps are also a great choice because they are usually made with a soft, non-snagging fabric, aren’t tight on the head, easy to get on/off, and are super comfortable!

Headbands – headbands are another hair accessory that, depending on the type, don’t cause breakage or damage.  Look for ones that are non-constraining without sharp edges, added hardware, or any other parts that may snag or tangle hair.

Clips – Claw clips and other large clips are a fantastic way to keep your hair up without pulling it too tight.  It’s important to choose a clip with a smooth finish and one that doesn’t break hair when it’s taken out.

Hair accessories for less breakage - 2Scrunchies – The scrunchie might be one of the only reasons that your hair misses the 90’s because the scrunchie is one of the most non-damaging hair accessories of all time.  Marc Jacobs has a new scruchie-ish product on the market, but for those who aren’t ready to bring the trend back, they are perfect for keeping your hair up at night.

Hair ties – For most, even if we switch to using less damaging hair accessories, a ponytail every now and then in inevitable.  Many hair accessory manufactures are creating better products and hair ties like these are a great alternative to the everyday elastic.  They not only look cute in your hair, they also work well around the wrist so are easy to literally keep on hand.

Absolute no-no’s – There are a few things to avoid at all costs when it comes to hair accessories.  Using rubber bands or accessories with exposed hardware are rusted or cracked, is a sure way to increase hair breakage and decrease its strength.

Using one or more of the non-damaging hair accessories listed above will get you one step closer to healthier, stronger hair.  Another way, of course, is by adding the Ovation Advanced Cell Therapy System to your daily routine.  For more information about our products see our website.

Enjoy stronger hair!

Holiday Party Hairstyles you can do at Home

Holiday parties are one of the reasons I love this time of year.  Maybe it’s the holiday music, the comfort food, or the spiked eggnog that brings out the happy in all of us.  Whether your fellow-party goers are friends, family, or co-workers, occasions like these are a great excuse to go glam.  Holiday parties are one of the few times a year that it’s completely appropriate to pull out that sequin covered dress or sparkly stilettos.  They are also one of the only times that most adults get a reason to rock an up-do or other formal hair style.  While this fun and great, it’s also precisely why some of us don’t even know where to start.

Holiday Party Hairstyles you can do at Home

As much as I’d love to have my hair professionally done for special occasions like holiday parties, it’s usually hard to make that happen.  This means that by doing it on my own, I need not only inspiration and help deciding on a do, but also a step-by-step instruction guide on how to create it.

It’s times like these that I turn to Pinterest.  Pinterest is a huge source of inspiration and ideas for up-dos and DIY hair styles.  The Ovation Pinterest page of course has several hair related boards, but one in particular is great if you’re looking for hair tutorials.  We’ve put together a board of “Hair How-Tos” that include classy, formal hairstyles, perfect for occasions like a holiday party, but are easy enough to do at home on your own and in under an hour. Whether you’re looking to wear your hair down, up, or somewhere in-between our board includes ideas that are sure to make your decision and holiday party hair prep a bit easier.

Here are some of my favorites from our Hair How To Board –

Vintage Waves – The vintage wave look is definitely a popular one and is a great way to curl your hair in maybe a different way than you normally do.  Because it is a different curl, I recommend a trial run, just so you know that it works on your hair type.  By the time your holiday parties come around, you’ll be able to pull it off in no time. Vintage waves works really well with cocktail attire and vintage accessories making it a brilliant look for winter parties.

Mini Twisted Buns – The best part about the mini bun look is that there is no exact way to create them.  I personally like the fact that that the style is intended to look a bit messy, meaning you can mess it up and pull it off all at the same time! It’s great for hair of all types and lengths and is the easiest of the styles mentioned.

Braided HaloFor longer hair styles, the braided halo is a beautiful style for dressy occasions. There are several ways to create the halo, but each is classy, polished and hip.  Braids in any form are trendy so if your hair isn’t long enough for a halo, you can always wrap a braid around a bun or add braided strands to an elegant ponytail.

No-Tease Bouffant – This bouffant tutorial is one of my favorites on Pinterest because I love any tip to help add volume without hair teasing.  This voluminous bouffant looks pretty as it’s shown on our board (worn half down), but also would look great with a ponytail or bun.

Another way to take your hair from “everyday” to “holiday” is to add a festive hair accessory.  A shiny or sparkly headpiece, headband or decorated bobby pins adds holiday cheer and makes whatever style you choose more sophisticated.  If the above dos aren’t for you, check out the entire board and Ovation Pinterest page for additional ideas, inspiration and just plain pretty hair!

Remember that any hair style is only enhanced by hair products like a Thermal Protection Spray and a Volume Enhancer, especially sulfate free products like Ovation’s.

Good luck, have fun and happy holidays!

2012 Halloween Costumes that are all about the Hair

Halloween is only a few weeks away and for many, the holiday can sneak up leaving people scrambling for last minute costumes, candy, and decorations.

That is definitely not the case for me. I am one of those Halloween people…I started planning my costume back in February and have since been perfecting every detail.  I’ve pinned all the latest Halloween decorations and plan on diy-ing each and every one of them.

If you’ve done any searching at all you’ve probably noticed the costume trends, but in case you haven’t let me enlighten you…

As they are every year, reality star inspired costumes are among the most popular.  People of all ages will be impersonating pop stars, pageant stars, celebrity couples, and political figures.  Zombies and vampires are back and spookier than ever.  The fiction inspired costumes might be my favorite coming in all forms from serious and dramatic characters in Hunger Games to the fun and innocent Angry Birds.

In my pursuit of Halloween costume perfection I’ve run across many costumes where the hair can make or break the ensemble.  And because at Ovation, we’re all about the hair, these are some of this year’s BEST hair focused Halloween costumes.

Fictional characters:  You can’t pull off Pricess Leia, Repunzel or a good pirate costume without the appropriate hair. You just can’t!

Reality TV stars: The right hair piece can take these reality star costumes from confusing to very cool.

New for 2012: These Halloween costumes are not only new, they involve some awesome hair.  With unique and fun costumes options like these this year, you can’t go wrong.

The best part about Halloween is that the options for costumes are truly endless.  I can’t wait to see what people come up with!  Not using a wig or hair piece this year? Don’t forget about Ovation products for heat protection and volume enhancement while styling your Halloween do.

Whether you decide on a costume that’s scary, humorous, creative, or one of the classics, be safe and have fun this Halloween!

Fall 2012 Must Have Hair Accessories

I just love hair accessories! You know those days when you don’t even know where to start when it comes to styling your hair? Or the days that you spend all this time on your hair just to feel like there’s something missing? Hair accessories can come to the rescue! They not only make it easy to add style to an otherwise boring do, they can also give a little inspiration and sometimes that’s all I need to turn an ok hair day into a great one.

Whether you’re looking to pump up the volume, add flavor to a bland style, or make your effortless do seem effortful, there are endless hair accessory options this fall.

Fall 2012 Must Have Hair Accessories
With options ranging from formal, handmade, and pricey to casual, inexpensive and just wacky, narrowing down the search is key.  For everyday hair needs, I look for hair accessories that are casual, easy, fun and trendy.

With that in mind, these are my must have fall accessories for 2012:

  1. This light weight beanie is perfect for fall and looks amazing with a side, messy braid. The sparkles add a sophisticated touch to this grungy look.
  2. A double headband takes a messy pony or bun up a notch and these 80’s inspired colors are sure to keep your day bright.
  3. Ponytail hardware is all the rage and I love the Geo Ponytail Holder in particular because it’s super trendy, but still dainty unlike some of the others.
  4. This goddess-looking stretch flower headband looks great with loose curls and can dress up a more casual outfit.
  5. With size options ranging from mini to extra large, these hair doughnuts are a cheap way to make a perfect bun every time.
  6. Want to wear your hair down, but add a little (or big) something? The Jumbo Hair Clip will keep the hair out of your face and will definitely turn some heads.

No matter which accessory you chose to try out this fall, Ovation styling products (Volume Enhancer and Thermal Protection spray) will keep your hair voluminous and healthy looking all day.

What accessories are you falling for this fall?
